7T Research Scans: Logistics & Safety

Flagged for merging

The October 2026 audit recommends merging this page with a sibling (see AUDIT.md). The content stands until then.

What this page tells you

7T scan essentials: bring two consent copies, C2, W9, metal screening and demographic forms; techs upload to pedro; complete MRI Safety and CAMRIS training for Stellar Chance badge access; book 2-hour slots on protocol 818407 with a physician present. Includes seizure emergency steps.

7T Scan info

  • Bring with you: 2 copies of the 7T consent form (ensure it is the most recent version), C2 form, W9, metal screening form, and demographic form
    (page not migrated)

  • We do not need use flywheel for 7T--the techs only need to upload to pedro

  • Level 1 MRI Safety training must be completed to have access to anything in Stellar Chance including building. Without this, you will not be able to get into the building to scan
    • Instructions for getting badge access:
      • First complete Level 1 MRI Safety training in Workday
      • Put in a ticket to request in person training
      • Complete this form and bring to in person training
      • A member of the CAMRIS team will respond to the ticket and will notify you of the next available training date. Once the online and site-specific trainings are complete, CAMRIS will grant badge access to the appropriate MRI facility (stellar chance in this case)
    • Please follow up with Dr. Mark Elliott if you filled out the registration form and you have not heard back from him yet about the training (melliott@pennmedicine.upenn.edu)
  • Patients will be scheduled at your weekly scheduling meetings with Gabby Bustamante
  • Call patients with Gabby and present them with available times➝book a two hour slot on CAMRIS on the protocol 818407➝track in SCHEDULE TRACKERS (Scan Scheduling Trackers (sEEG, 3T/fMRI, 7T)) ➝add to Imaging Calendar
  • Every few weeks, email the epilepsy fellows and providers with an updated 7T schedule; you must have a physician present when running the scan with a patient
  • On the day of the scan, you will meet them in the HUP6 lobby (3400 Spruce Street) and walk them to Stellar Chance to complete the scan
  • Patient will be getting 2D CEST only. Controls receive 2D and 3D CEST sequences.
  • After the scan, please have Jacqui burn the CD for you. Pick it up the next day and drop it off to Gabby at the PEC. The CD needs to have the patient's initials and their birthday.

EMERGENCY STEPS/CONTACTS IN CASE OF 7T SEIZURE:

  • Remove patient from the scanner and move them to the gurney and take them out of the scan room.
  • Have the phone number of the clinician sitting in on the scan so you can notify them and they can evaluate the patient. They will determine if the patient needs to be sent over to the ED.
  • If they need to go to ED, call Penn Police (215) 898-7297 so they can send an ambulance to Stellar Chance. (Rapid Response is for the hospital ONLY. They cannot respond to Stellar Chance!)
